Hard to believe it, but Gohmert goes even lower
Also, how about sending that $12 million to border cities?
Truthfully, writing anything about U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert is not worth the pixels on a computer screen. Here is a man who wasn’t even relevant before he decided to end his “career” in Congress.
If one wanted something accomplished in Congress, there was hardly a less effective way of getting it done than through Gohmert, a laughingstock among his colleagues and most of America. Only behind the Pine Curtain can a politician such as Gohmert find love and acceptance.
Not that his lack of success kept him from making outrageous statements, most of which have no basis in fact, or are designed to whip up MAGA fervor. Sorry, I don’t mean to be redundant.
My decision some months ago, shortly after Gohmert came in third in the race for the Republican nomination for Texas Attorney General, was to never bring him up again. No need to pile on.
And then Gohmert had to go and give an American flag that flew at the U.S. Capitol to a woman who was among those who stormed that very building on Jan 6. Just when you think he can’t go any lower, cannot stir up any most angst or cause any more division in the country, Louie pulls one out of his underwear.
It simply cannot be ignored.
Gohmert awarded the flag to Dr. Simone Gold, the founder of a group called America’s Frontline Doctors, a fringe group that insisted that hydroxychloroquine was a miracle cure for Covid-19.
Non-spoiler alert: Few people believed this tripe to begin with and fewer still believe it now. Really, it is hard to imagine that even Gohmert actually believes this. It feels more like another bowing down to his leader, Donald Trump.
Gold was simply another protestor who was intent on doing her part to bring anarchy to Washington, D.C. I should mention that her group, America’s Frontline Doctors, has raised $400,000 to pay for her legal defense.
She failed in that, just as she has failed in most of her efforts, other than apparently convincing Gohmert to make one of his last acts among his most shameful.
It should be noted that many thousands of flags are flown over the Capitol each year, some for only a few hours so that the number can be increased. The flags are often given to big-time contributors. It isn’t as if this was one of 365.
Still, just how often are Capitol flags given to honor confessed criminals?
Gohmert was a state district court judge in Smith County for years before he ran for Congress, dealing with criminals every day. I don’t believe any of them were intent on tearing apart the United States.
It is sort of doubtful he would have awarded an American flag that flew over the Smith County Courthouse to any one of those individuals, no matter what the charge. Some of those people probably deserve it more than a hack doctor who deluded the public.
In these sad days, though, politics trumps truth at almost every juncture and Gohmert hasn’t been on the side of truth for a very long time.
It would not be surprising to find out more bits of truth about Gohmert’s actions in the years after his term finally ends.
Please, Lord, let it end.
Gohmert’s successor will be either Republican Nathaniel Moran, the current Smith County judge, or Democract Jrmar Jefferson, whose Linkedin profiles lists him as the CEO of something called “OR”. I don’t think that means “operating room.” His second entry cites his experience as a “natural living & breathing human being.”
At least his television spots are written a bit better.
This being Republican territory, Moran is the overwhelming favorite and will likely be elected to Congress in November.
Moran does not appear to be quite the MAGA Republican that Gohmert is, but he hasn’t made that many public statements, either. We can only hope.
Time will tell, but there is always a chance that our representation will improve and if that happens, even marginally, it would be a good thing.

In state finance numbers, $12 million isn’t a huge amount of money but, still, couldn’t we find some better use for those funds than sending migrants on tours of the United States courtesy of Texas?
Apparently not, at least not with Gov. Greg Abbott at the helm.
That is the amount the state has paid — thus far — in busing migrants to those “liberal” cities where Democrats are at the helm.
It might be nice if Abbott took that $12 million and sent it to border cities if there is such a crisis. That’s where it might do some good.
The bus trips provide some nice red meat for people that Abbott hopes will vote for him and they seem to be eating it up.
Given that the busing of migrants is a purely political move, it seems as if Abbott ought to be paying for these bus trips out of his campaign chest.
Of course, that wouldn’t make it any more humane a policy, which is the real problem.
Abbott has plenty of time to spend on political ploys but so far as I can tell, he can’t spare a minute to work on the problem of people shooting up Texas churches, schools, and stores with assault-style rifles.
Yet the polls still lean in his favor. Now there are less than two months to change that.
